Not Joni Mitchel
But Julie Doiron is Canadian, she writes and sings mostly acoustic songs accompanied by her airy guitar sounds and little more, and the songs have a bleak and spartan sound and lyrics, but the voice is warm and the music is lush. "... And the neighbors here don’t understand how I could miss you, and the spaces here are small and their yelling makes them smaller..." from 'Oh These Walls' on Heart & Crime, her latest, is a great example, as is 'The Last Time' on Julie Doiron & The Wooden Stars. Twenty years ago, I used to go for days on end with a Joni Mitchel cassette in my walkman. I have a feeling I could do the same with these songs. | ![]() Listen to 'Don't Ask' |
